Florida is a no-fault state, so your own Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage pays first, no matter who caused the crash. The standard policy provides up to $10,000 in benefits. PIP generally pays 80% of reasonable, necessary medical expenses and 60% of lost income, plus a $5,000 death benefit. However, the full $10,000 in medical benefits is only available if a qualified provider determines you have an “emergency medical condition.” Otherwise, medical benefits may be limited to $2,500. Because these limits run out quickly after a serious injury, many people also need a claim against the at-fault driver or their own uninsured motorist coverage.
